Otoplasty

Otoplasty is an ear cosmetic surgery performed to correct the shape, position, or size of ears that are congenitally deformed or damaged later in life.

Purpose: Otoplasty is usually done to correct aesthetic problems such as prominent ears (ears that stick out noticeably). It is also applied for ear asymmetry or congenital deformities.

Who is it for?: It can be performed on both children (usually from ages 5–6 onward) and adults. Since ear development is complete around this age, early surgery can also provide psychological benefits.

How is it done?: The surgeon makes a small incision behind the ear, reshapes the cartilage, and brings the ear into a more natural position. It is usually done under local anesthesia, sometimes with general anesthesia.

Recovery Process: Mild pain, swelling, and bruising may occur after surgery. A head bandage is used, and patients usually return to daily life within a few days. Full recovery may take several weeks.

Risks: As with any surgery, there are minor risks such as infection, bleeding, or asymmetry, but these risks are minimized with an experienced surgeon.
